bras overrated?

Confession: I have SO not been wanting to wear a bra lately. They all just feel so constricting and annoying. The weird thing is when I was first nursing Asher, I wanted to wear one all the time to support all the extra weight. Now, I have been trying to contrive ways to go without one in public without anyone noticing.

Anyone else out there feel this way? Or am I just one step closer to full on hippie-dom?

For practical (need something to hold the nursing pads in) and modesty purposes I can't be sans bras all the time, which means I REALLY need to invest in some new nursing bras. Any suggestions? I want something super comfy with no underwire. Help please!

  1. I just go braless. I find that maternity shirts with the waist right under the bust can help keep my breasts up (no, I still don't fit my clothes) as well as tank undershirts with the built-in shelf. I also use the criss-cross sleep nursing bras sometimes. I also find that since i wear Isaac in the wrap a lot, it doesn't matter what I'm wearing because no one can see.

But there's nothing wrong with braless. :) And no one's really looking anyway.

  2. weird that I was JUST thinking about this today

Nursing bras are torture devices. I hate them. I've yet to find a decent one that's comfortable enough to wear all day without wanting to kill myself. Nursing bras+g's+whatever else is straight ridiculous.

When I'm just around the house I stick to a camisole over my lady lumps and it seems to work alright. Nobody's looking right?

  3. I have a post planned about how it's time to say goodbye to the nursing bra---cuz the kiddo doesn't want to nurse anymore. I guess I can go back to using a regular bra now. That will be strange.

Anyway, I got some comfy nursing ones at Motherhood maternity. I call them my "nighttime" bras because they are comfy enough to wear to bed. Even though I don't anymore because I just don't care about keeping the bosoms perky.

  4. I just tried to post this comment but got an error message, so I'm re-posting just in case!

I love the Bravado Body Silk Seamless nursing bra. A bit pricey, but worth every penny to me. It is very comfortable and very supportive and no underwire.

  6. honestly I just wear a sports bra and yank it up... I get so tired of all the un-hooking.

  7. i have NEVER used nursing bras. i bought a couple when i first started nursing george, but quickly found that all the hooking and unhooking was a pain and they were miserable to wear. so i went and bought a few awesome bras that are just for everyday wear, without underwire (not padded, but thick enough to absorb some milk leakage if necessary), and i just pulled it down over to one side to nurse. i haven't even put a nursing bra on this time around (except for the sleep bras early on). SO much easier than fiddling with hooks-- all i do is pull my garment top and bra down and over at the same time, lift up my shirt, and latch the baby on. highly recommend ditching the hooks and wire :).

  8. My favorite nursing bras are Bravado! They are a bit pricey but so worth it. They hold up and are soft. Target has nice tanks and so does Motherwear.com.
Maybe you would like a nighttime nursing bra for a little support but not much 'bra'. Motherwear has them and they are cheap and easy :)

  9. Bravado makes a wonderfully comfy bra with no wires. It has thin pads that pull out. You can keep them in if you want that t-shirt bra look, or you can pull them out if you just want comfort.

Personally, after investing lots of money in nursing bras, I ended up spending most of my time in nursing tank tops from Target. I'm not nursing now (because my toddler weaned himself despite my trying to keep going, and sometimes I still wear them just because they are so comfortable. Unfortunately, they have redesigned theirs, so now it's got this thing that goes around each breast, but it would be easy enough to cut that and just hand-tack the cut off parts with a needle and thread.

My second favorite way to wear nursing pads and still be comfy was using the sleep bras from Motherhood Maternity. Those were so comfy and I could get away with wearing them during the day since I'm not in need of tons of support.

  10. Thanks for all the tips ladies! I'm definitely considering getting a Bravado bra for when I really need that seemless and supported look. I currently have a Mimi maternity nursing sleeping bra and two target nursing tanks that I wear the most. I've stopped wearing my other nursing bras except for when I go to church. But even the more comfy ones just aren't comfy to me anymore. I think I need to reassess my size or something. Anyway... it still feels best to go braless! :-)

  11. Ugh Bras. I got a Bravado and I like it a lot. HOWEVER, I bought a nursing tank from Motherhood Maternity with a built in bra and I LOOOOVE it. It hides the garments, is way comfier than a bra and I wear it every day.

  12. I wore those nursing sleep bras ALL the TIME (except out in public) so you're doing just fine, man. And is it hippie to go sans bra or just SENSIBLE? Dude! A Woman did NOT invent the bra! No sensible woman would contrive such a thing, it's torturous! Enjoy the freedom, man.

  13. I'd love to go braless again, especially since I have nothing to support, lol. Alas, my nipples are super sensitive when I'm nursing and they, ummmm, stand out too much for my comfort when I'm out in public places.

I have 2 absolute favorite bras, Bravado Body Silk and Motherhood "Medium Support Soft Cup No Wire Nursing Bra" (that's what they are called on their website). The Motherhood one is cheap and very comfy, but it does have small flexible plastic strips inserted on the outside of each cup, under the armpit area, if that makes sense. I just make a tiny cut and take those things out. I love how this bra keeps it's shape even after many washes and drying cycles (and I normally try not shop at Motherhood).

  14. ummm.....i don't ever wear a bra, haha. especially at home! i hate bras...it bothers me to have something around my ribs for some reason. when i go in public and want to look nice, i'll put on a super comfy cheap bra from target that has no support whatsoever, but i am small so it doesn't matter.

basically, just embrace the no bra thing ;) at least at home!

  15. Oh I don't wear bras at home! I'm mostly just concern about when I'm out. I have gone out without one when in certain clothing but I can't do it with most of my clothes. My breasts are too big when I'm nursing to be able to get away with it. Plus as I said, I need something to hold in the nursing pads or else I'd have a wet shirt! Plus, like Olya, my nipples don't hide when I'm nursing either. :-)
