pregnancy the second time around

In case you missed my thanksgiving post, I'm pregnant. Approximately 10 weeks along, with an estimated date of arrival sometime the end of June or early July. I find that this time around I am much less attached to the due date. With Asher I always knew exactly how many weeks and days I was based on that eventful "first day of last period" and the corresponding "due date". This time I'm more vague about it all because I realize more strongly how much of a guess it is. And since in Utah you have to be 37 weeks to have a home birth (more on that later) and I am prone to early delivery, my due date may be fudged a bit to give me a few days buffer zone.

Being pregnant this time has definitely been harder. I've felt more sick although I still haven't thrown up, so that's a plus. I have definitely had days where I wished I would if it would make me feel better. Tonight has been one of those days. The nausea also started a lot earlier than with Asher. I started feeling a bit queasy the day I missed my period. With Asher it didn't start until about 8 weeks. The biggest problem this time around is that most foods sound totally gross to me. But if I don't eat I feel more sick, so it becomes a vicious cycle. A few weeks ago I spent a couple hours making my yummy veggie enchiladas, only to take one bite and not be able to stomach any more. I'm a little chagrined to say that I actually begged Jared to go get me Wendy's and nearly cried I as so happy when he brought it home, frosty and all. It was delicious. How cliche am I?

I also embarrassed myself at the temple on Friday when I nearly fainted in front of a large room of people. Never had that happen before. Something about kneeling nearly did me in. Fortunately, the temple workers are dears and brought me some water and crackers.

Of course, even with all the first trimester woes, I am very happy to be expecting another little one. I know in a few more weeks I'll feel much better and the memory of these sick days will once again fade. I had my first visit with my amazing midwife Rebecca on Wednesday. Did all the paperwork and bloodwork and got to see our tiny little baby on the ultrasound machine. The baby's back was to us so it didn't look like much, but we saw that heartbeat fluttering away--a very wonderful sight indeed!

Asher of course has no idea what's going on. I am excited to see how he reacts to my growing belly and to see his understanding grow in the coming months. I am still nursing him and plan on doing so as long as I can. I did have more nipple soreness the first few weeks, but its actually gotten better recently. My supply has decreased somewhat but Asher is still definitely getting milk. I've just noticed that he is also eating a lot more solid food these days.

Everything does still feel a bit surreal. I will be really happy to get past the first trimester and hopefully start feeling better with more energy. I really enjoyed being pregnant with Asher. I hope I feel the same way this time around.

  2. Katrina!!! :D Congratulations! I am quite envious!!! ha ha - I never knew how much I would love Mont, and now I want like 20 of him. lol I'm so happy for you! This is exciting for me to read about what's different for you and what is the same, and what kind of birthing you plan on doing. ooohhhh so many congratulations.

What you asked about the darkness up here. When we found out we could move to Alaska I actually got pretty excited for the long dark winters where you have to hide inside. Night time always seemed like a fun time of 'day' for me, where I was more alert, more creative, yet at the same time more relaxed. But I take vitamins for the Vit D, since our house doesn't get direct sunlight from mid-Nov. to mid-Feb. It is nuts! But I love it!! Come for a visit if you'd like!

  4. isn't it funny how after weeks of nausea, finally throwing up feels like the best thing ever? ugh. hope that your nausea goes away soon, because that part is NOT FUN at all. I always ended up just eating a ton of oranges, because that was the only thing that sounded good and where the smell didn't make me sick. I still haven't eaten an omelette since I was five weeks pregnant with Isaac and the smell of Neil making them for the girls made me run for the bathroom.

  5. Oh shoot. I was really hoping you'd be like, " I feel SO much better this time around"...not WORSE. Well I can't wait to read all about your adventures. Although it occurs to me that I'd much rather hear about them, in real life.

Call me if you'd like Asher to come over for a play date;) Or if you need me to bring you some fast food;) I say whatever it takes to get through it!

My sister-in-law really did pass out in the temple while she was pregnant! Hope you feel better soon! Maybe it's so different this time 'cause it's a girl!

  11. YAY! So exciting to see that little heartbeat and know that there really is a little baby growing in there. I hope nursing continues to go well-- sustaining three lives might take its toll on your body, but I say go for it for as long as you can. I nursed Georgie until I was about 12 weeks pregnant this time, but I only stopped because he was a little over two and we were ready. I think I could've kept it up longer if we had needed to. I hope you get feeling better-- I can't imagine being sick and taking care of a toddler all day. Good luck!

  12. I always have to be careful at the temple... especially in sealing sessions. For some reason I ALWAYS get lightheaded while kneeling and did almost pass out once (I think I was pregnant with Joey at the time, but can't be sure). Just the other day Kris and I were the witness couple in an endowment session and I had to consiously think of shifting my weight on my knees to avoid getting lightheaded. I wonder what it is...

Anyway - congrats!! My professional opinion is it's a girl. ;) I've heard you get more sick with girls, although it was the other way around for me. I wasn't real sick when I was pregnant with Joey, but still had some nausea and vomiting. I was only nauseous like once with Savanna!

Best of luck to you Katrina! I look forward to following your journey - I'm so glad you blog! While I think I am done having babies, if I ever do again I am doing it the natural way!! So I will be absorbing all you post about that!!

You rock, by the way! :)

  13. Congratulations! I always wondered what the protocol was for issues in the temple. I was in the Medford, OR temple shortly after it was opened. I was newly pregnant with Fiona and I wasn't sure what to do if I was going to throw up. I basically sat there and rocked back and forth praying not to throw up and embarrass myself. I didn't, just barely.

  15. I know it won't happen, but how awesome would that be if Baby was born on Asher's birthday?

    Congratulations, Friend!

  16. Katrina, I fainted in a session at the temple too for sealings. It was really embaressing. I love the temple workers...they are so sweet and you never feel lost or confused when you go.
Congrats on baby # 2. I hope your pregnancy goes well and you get feeling better soon! Nothing worse than feeling sick all day.

  17. We're having our babies at the exact same time... and feeling the exact same way. You have my full empathy and sympathy and compassion all rolled into one. Haven't tried the veggie enchiladas but have done the husband begging for food thing... and thankful that he obliges. I keep telling myself that it will be over soon... but I just have to believe it!

    best of luck!!!
