excuse me while I rant

I hate tv network executives. I hate that they are ratings slaves. I know tv is a business just like everything else, but its product is something people care about and are invested in creatively. Television shows tell stories, and when shows are cancelled before the story is complete it is like only reading 3/4 of a novel. Who wants to do that?! This year has seen the demise of two of our favorite shows--and the only 2 that Jared actually took the time to watch each week--Pushing Daisies and Kyle XY. I have already lamented the loss of Pushing Daisies, one of the most creative, witty, and darling television shows ever! I won't go into it more because it depresses me.

Last night was the "Series Finale" of Kyle XY and it ended on a complete cliff-hanger. No resolution whatsoever. I am so mad! It turns out ABC Family decided to cancel the show after this season was filmed, so the writers didn't have the chance to wrap up the story. I hate that the powers that be base their decision solely on ratings and don't give shows more of a chance. Why don't they try a better time slot and more advertising? Kyle XY was a really interesting show and different than other things on TV. If they really wanted to end it, they could have wrapped up the story satisfactorily in just a few more episodes. But no, now we are left hanging. I think it is ridiculous. Cancelling shows so abrubtly shows a complete lack of integrity and respect for the creative process in story telling. Shame on you, ABC... again!

  1. I haven't seen those shows, but if I did I'd be ranting too.

    Shame shame shame indeed.

  2. Thanks for airing our frustration darling. :) As I said, it is like dumping your significant other every two years because a new one has "better ratings." Absurd.

  3. I feel your pain, Katrina. These shows are in good company. "Full House" ended abruptly after running EIGHT seasons. How rude! And let us not forget "My So-Called Life" that only aired one amazing season and then ended on a cliffhanger!

By the way, I mentioned "Pushing Daisies" recently on my blog: www.funtalia.com. I'm not sure how often you check it out, but I posed a question on my March 14th post intended especially for you. :)

  4. I am often baffled how we keep seeing The Bachelor, season 11 and shows like Pushing Daisies get canceled.

The biggest loss in my book: Arrested Development. SO GOOD, but it only lasted 3 seasons. If you haven't seen it, check it out on Hulu. It's worth it.

  5. I hate that they cancel shows that do have followers but "not the best ratings" and then replace the show with an even worse show and that show has to struggle to get viewers. My husband complains about this crap all the time (He loved Pushing Daisies)

  6. Oh, how could I forget "Arrested Development," my favorite show of all time? Good call, Missy.

  7. Ugh... Fox did that to a little show called "Point Pleasant." It was on after The OC and a few girls in my dorm and I watched it every week (although we were ashamed to admit it)! It was supposed to take a break for a few weeks and come back... but it never did. I never did find out whether that stupid priest was dead or alive!
