26

...feels older than 25. For sure. Sounds like I should be an adult or something. I mean I'm on the downhill slope to 30 now people! As Jared lovingly reminds me--this is why I married an older man--to always make me feel young. Works for me. My hubs turned 31 1/2 yesterday by the way--Happy Half-Birthday babe!

I had a good birthday yesterday. I got many phone calls and messages from family and friends and spent a wonderful day with my boys. Jared made me a yummy breakfast and then I went back to bed! So decadent. I got my haircut (not sure if I like it, more on that later) and then we went to lunch at PF Changs. Delish! Stopped by Old Navy and Target for a couple things and then just hung out at home for the evening. Jared was gonna make me dinner and a cake but we were too full so we just had brownies and ice cream for dinner. Oh yeah, and my big present was a new coat-- its a beautiful dark royal blue knee length dress coat. Love it!

Here you can see my pretty coat, my adorable baby, and my not-sure-what-to-think hair. I really liked it when she stylist did it. It was flipped out cute and stuff... but then it all flipped under and started looking too soccer momish to me. So we'll see what it does when I do it, but I have a feeling I will be going back in next week for a touch up.

photo tag: cousins

That Girl in Brazil tagged me to show the 6th picture in my 6th folder. She also flattered me with a lovely compliment, and I cannot resist such things. I chose to use the 6th folder of 2009 since iPhoto automatically organizes everything by date and I just leave it that way. So this photo is the 6th from the January 8, 2009 folder.

This is Asher with his cousin Evan the day we left Utah. Evan was almost 3 months old at the time. He is Jared's younger sister's second son. It was very fun to see Asher try to play with him. This is not the best of the bunch of photos I took that day but the boys are still very cute. I love how Evan has his finger by his mouth like he's thinking about something. And Asher looks like he's contemplating how to grab that finger. (Which he did shortly after.)

This reminds me that I still have lots of photos from our trip that I haven't finished going through and haven't blogged. I should get on that.

In other news, I must give a quick shout out to my baby who slept for 9 hours straight last night!!! He was regularly sleeping 8 hours before our trip but since we've been home he was waking up every 2-4 hours. Not so fun for Mommy! I really hope this is the beginning of wonderful sleep habits again. The only down side was that my boobs about exploded because I hadn't nursed in so long! Consequently, I woke up a lot anyway because I was uncomfortable. But they'll get used to going that long again and all will be well. Yay for Asher!

someone is six months old today

"Who me?"

Yes you.

"Really?"

Yep!

"Well that's great! I like being six months old."

Why don't you tell us a little about what it's like to be six months old?

"Ok. I can sit up. It's really fun."

"I have nice chunky legs and chubby toes."

"I really like to suck and chew on my bottom lip."

"And I still cry sometimes. Like when my mom has been taking pictures of me for too long."

Other things about Asher at six months:

He's getting very good at grabbing and holding and seems to be showing a preference for his left hand. (His daddy is very excited about that.)
He's very loud! He likes to yell and shriek when he's playing.
He plays with his toys more and more.
He's still not very excited about solid food. We keep trying every day though.
He likes to throw himself around. He leans to get things.
He loves cups and will take drinks from them.
He loves looking at himself in the mirror.
He loves interacting with other kids.
He laughs a lot.
He grabs our faces and gives us kisses.
His eyes are still blue--mostly. They seem to get murkier all the time.
But they sure are beautiful.
It's still anyone's guess as to what color they will end up.

(They are actually darker in person. It's hard to tell what color they are in person.)

*Jan. 23-- Asher had his 6 month appointment and is in the 75th percentile across the board. He's 27 inches long and 17 pounds 11 ounces. We think he's perfect!

cute babies

Last Friday we went for Thai food with our friends Molly and Arnie and their kids. They had a new baby in November and I snapped a couple pictures. Isn't Thea sweet?

And because I can't resist, here are a couple of Asher too.

witness to history

With the snow still coming down outside, inside we watched history be made.
He won't remember it, but Asher watched the inauguration of President Obama too.

Oh happy day!
God bless America!

snow!

The view from our window

North Carolina is getting the most snow they've seen in five years!
In true southern fashion, no one is going anywhere and all the schools are canceled.

don't buy bottled water

photo from www.healthandmen.com

We've all done it and we've all drank it without thinking much of it. But I'm not going to anymore. Last night we watched the documentary Flow. It is all about water and explores the world water crisis. Did you even know there was a world water crisis? Me neither.

A few disturbing facts:
  • Of the 6 billion people on earth, 1.1 billion do not have access to safe, clean drinking water.
  • The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency currently does not regulate 51 known water contaminants. (www.foodandwaterwatch.org)
  • While the average American uses 150 gallons of water per day, those in developing countries cannot find five. (www.charitywater.org)
  • The water and sanitation crisis claims more lives through disease than any war claims through guns. (www.water.org)
  • According to the National Resources Defense Council, in a scientific study in which more than 1,000 bottles of 103 brands of water were tested, about one-third of the bottles contained synthetic organic chemicals, bacteria, and arsenic. (www.nrdc.org)
  • Water is a $400 billion dollar global industry; the third largest behind electricity and oil.
    CBS News, FLOW.
  • Californiaʼs water supply is running out – it has about 20 years of water left in the state.
Maude Barlow, author of Blue Covenant and co-author of Blue Gold, National Chairperson of the Council of Canadians, FLOW.
  • There are over 116,000 human-made chemicals that are finding their way into public water supply systems.
William Marks, author of Water Voices from Around the World, FLOW.
  • In Bolivia nearly one out of every ten children will die before the age of five. Most of those deaths are related to illnesses that come from a lack of clean drinking water.
Jim Schultz, founder of the Democracy Center in Bolivia, FLOW.
  • The cost per person per year for having 10 liters of safe drinking water every day is just $2 USD.
Ashok Gadgil, Senior Staff Scientist in the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, FLOW
There are so many different parts of this issue and I can't do them justice here. I strongly encourage you to watch the film. We Netflixed it. We were left appalled at the way humans treat each other.

Part of the problem is big corporations are making it very difficult for people in third world countries to get clean water. But it's also happening right here in the US where companies such as Nestle, Coca-Cola and Pepsi are pumping huge amounts of water out of the ground for bottled water. It's leaving the communities where the water comes from at risk. Plus, there is no guarantee that your bottled water is any cleaner or better than your tap water. Much of the time it is the same. The US government does very little to regulate what goes into bottled water.

My husband is the ultimate water snob. He rarely likes water straight from the tap. So what do we do? We use a water filter. Its so simple. And MUCH cheaper than bottled water. Americans are spending billions of dollars a year on bottled water. For a fraction of what we spend we could provide the whole world with clean drinking water.

The water crisis is a huge complex issue, but by doing this one small thing, I think we can make a difference. Plus, all those plastic bottles won't be going into the landfills. So please think before you buy that next bottle of water. And go watch Flow to learn more or check out their website: http://flowthefilm.com

miracle on the hudson

from msnbc.com

I have been really touched this week watching and reading about the plane crash on the Hudson river. When I first saw the news all I could think about was how terrifying it must have been for anyone traveling on that plane with children. Having just flown with my baby I could imagine it all too well. It is SUCH a miracle that everyone is ok, including a 9 month old baby boy. The following are two really well done news pieces that tell the story. I cried my eyes out through both of them.

From The New York Times:

Published: January 17, 2009
From the plane hitting the water to the last person reaching dry land, scores of human dramas unfolded.

From Dateline:

future foodie

Hi. My name is Asher.

I've been very interested in food lately, so my mom and dad decided it was time to have me try some rice cereal.

I liked playing with the spoon, but that cereal stuff was kinda gross.

Note my apprehension as I eye the food.
I know you put Mama's milk in there, but I'm not convinced.

I do not think we can call that a success. Give me my mama!

Or at least let me show off my new sitting skills.

While I play with my fun ball.

I know you wish you had one. Or three.

Uh-oh! I'm going down, but I'm taking my ball with me!

Oh well. I'll just grab my toes.

programming note

We are finally home again in North Carolina! It was wonderful to see so many family and friends during our trip and now it is very wonderful to be back again in our cozy home. This was a long trip! Of course there is lots to catch up on and I have TONS of photos and such to blog. I've decided for journaling purposes to post things on the actual day they happened. That way I can continue to post about things at home without feeling like the holiday posts are all mixed up. So please check back these next couple weeks and scroll down for all the holiday happenings.

asher loves his brother and sisters

One of the very best parts about being in Utah is how much time Asher has had with his brother and sisters. They really all love each other!

asher and his uncles

Asher had lots of fun getting to know my brothers Michael and Nick.
And maybe tormenting them a little already.

Especially Nick.
Check out those fists full of hair.

He just tried stealing Mike's drawstrings.
