so true

Good sense from CNN's Roland Martin:

Commentary: An 'average' American will never be president

Quite frankly, I dont' think any of us want an "average" guy or gal to be president. Whoever runs this country should definitely be the cream of the crop. They'll have to be to sort through the complicated mess we're in.

  2. I think your comment is very interesting Katrina ("I don't think anyone would want an average guy")...care to elaborate?

I would LOVE an average guy. The people in politics are supposed to represent the people. Well, I'm not sure about you, but I don't know anyone who is a multi-millionaire, doesn't ever have to worry about money, and had an easy-in to an elitist school.

I think we've gotten IN the complicated messes we've had because politicians don't represent us. The polls show that people don't want the war anymore, but the elected officials (both democratic and republican) don't seem to care. I'm so frustrated with politicians forgetting that they represent the general public.

I have to agree with my fiance when he says "anyone who runs for office isn't someone we'd ever want in office."

  3. Tia, I totally hear what you are saying. I guess what I meant by "average" was that I don't want some C student, average Joe type. I want someone who has been successful, who is smart. I don't mean they have to have gone to an Ivy League, but wherever they went they should have been at the top of their class. I didn't mean average in their income. I don't really care about that. I want someone who is above average in ideals, intellect, compassion, understanding, common sense, and experience. I don't care whether so and so would feel comfortable having a beer with them. Who cares about that? Shouldn't the leader of our country be above average? He's the LEADER!

Sadly, I think your fiance is right ... the best person for the job would never actually want it and so we are left with all those who do.

  4. I think the real bummer is that the average American could never afford to run for president, so the sheer cost with deter anyone with half a brain.

  5. I suppose it is really sad that most people couldn't run even if they wanted to because of the cost. However, I'm also a firm believer that if there's a will there's a way...even for a hugely incredibly expensive bid for president. I don't think someone is an elitest for going to a prestigious school. In fact, I'd probably prefer it. I don't want an "every day person" who graduates with a HS diploma running our country. I'll take a top notch college degree over that any day. Of course it doesn't guarantee a sure fire perfect candidate but it sure helps in the knowledge department!!
