what's up, baby?

photo from birth.com

I think I felt my baby move. I have no way of knowing for sure. I've been questioning every little gurgle in my belly for the past couple weeks. But this definitely felt different. My first clue is that it was in the area of my uterus. Duh. And at first it felt like something turned. It didn't really feel like a flutter. I can't describe it. Then about 5 minutes later I felt something again. This time more fluttery. Could it be the baby? How the heck am I supposed to know?

For all you ladies who have been pregnant, how did you know it was the baby moving? When did you first feel it move? What did it feel like?

  1. With first babies, I think most women feel like you at first, questioning every feeling in your tummy and not really being sure if it's the baby. The feelings will just keep getting bigger and stronger until one day, you just KNOW it's the baby. I think I knew I was feeling the baby around 16-18 weeks. Then by the end of the 2nd trimester, she was REALLY moving around. It's so fun!

  2. I swear I felt some baby gurgling feelings around 14 weeks, but I'm still not 100% sure that's what it was. It felt really, really fast. But by 17 weeks I had felt the baby for sure. Around that time, if you lie in bed in the morning before going to the bathroom, you can feel the top of your uterus pretty well and if I poked around a bit, the baby would sometimes move from one side to the other it felt like.

Now (at 28 weeks) the kicks are hilarious! She'll do like 6 rapid fire ones all in the same spot, like she's trying to get my attention. Feeling the baby move I think has been my favorite thing about pregnancy. You feel like you always have a little friend in there.

  3. i first felt abigail move at about 19 weeks. I was lying on the floor after eating thanksgiving dinner and she totally kicked me SO hard, and it was easy to feel because i was so incredibly full of yummy food. :-) at first, they just seem to feel like little flutters or stomach gurgles.

with juliet, i felt her WAY earlier--at about 11 weeks. she was a much, much, much more active baby than abigail, to the point where it literally took me 2 hours to fall asleep every night because of the painful kicks, and i would wake up about every 15 minutes. she has also been much more active now that she's out in the world--she never stops wiggling and scoots all around the house, whereas abigail didn't begin crawling for another couple of months past jules' current age.

it also just depends on how early you feel the baby depending on how tight your stomach muscles are and how slender you are--i think the general rule is that if you're on the trim side you feel the baby earlier, and in subsequent pregnancies you'll feel it earlier too because your muscles just aren't as tight as they used to be.

  4. oh, but guess what else you have to look forward to--the baby kicking your husband if you sleep all snuggled up. I always curl up to Neil's back and one night he woke up demanding to know why I was punching him in the spine--but it was the baby.

  5. Oh I think it's the baby for sure. I was the exact same way...not really sure if it was her or not, but then they just keep getting stronger and stronger, and you look back and say, "yep that was her alright". I think I felt them as early as 15 weeks. Fun!

  6. You could definitely be feeling baby! How exciting is that? There is nothing more amazing than really feeling your baby moving, especially your first!

For me baby's kicks were more obvious with each pregnancy. 19 weeks for #1, 15 weeks for #2, and 12 weeks for #3. (I had to look it up for you!) I wrote that it felt like a combination of a muscle twinge and a gas bubble.

Does that sound familiar? Even if it doesn't, you're sure to be feeling something VERY soon!

  7. Nicki, that is kinda what it feels like. I just was feeling it again and an internal muscle twinge is a good way of putting it. I'm gonna believe it's the baby. Makes me happy!

  8. I wondered the same things with Ella. When it's your first you question everything you feel. I have felt this baby already and the doc said that is possible, esp for "skinny" people which you fall into that category. I remember distinctly feeling a kick from Ella on Easter which meant I was about 4 months along which is around now.

So I bet it was your baby!

  9. Hooray! It's the baby. Of course it's the baby! Why else would your uterus be moving??? :)

  10. I thought it was really hard to tell, too. But as your babe gets bigger, you will be able to tell!
My mom said that the first time she felt me and the first time she felt my brother were totally different. One was a "flutter" and the other was a "poke, poke, poke".
