the presidential race of a lifetime

Is this exciting or what? I was up WAY too late last night watching the Super Tuesday results come in from around the country.

First the Republicans: I am disappointed that Romney didn't do better, but at the same time I am just plain sick of the Republicans. I'm sick of them attacking each other. And arguing over who wants to be in Iraq longer, when most of the country thinks this war should be over sooner rather than later. I feel like the highly conservative base they are all pandering to is a minority of Americans. I know in order to get the nomination they need those supporters but it seems a bit ridiculous. I think that they are all good guys, but I don't particularly like any of them much anymore. I think that McCain is gonna get the nomination, and I won't be at all surprised to see Huckabee as his running mate. McCain needs the support of the Southern Conservatives that love Huckabee. And Huckabee doesn't have a chance of getting the nomination for himself. Sadly, I just don't think Romney can catch up to McCain at this point.

As for the Democrats: I really want Obama to make it. He did well last night. Hillary won some of the really big states but basically they tied last night in the amount of delegates won. I think that if Obama's momentum keeps up he could pull ahead. And I really think he is a better national candidate against John McCain. The Republicans know that too. They are praying that Hillary gets the nomination because they can demonize her. But if Obama gets it, I think it's pretty certain he'd win. There are a lot of people who like him even if they don't consider themselves as liberal as he is. I am one of those people. I'm reading his book The Audacity of Hope right now. It is excellent. He is a fantastic writer. I recommend it to anyone regardless of your party affiliation.

It's going to be very interesting to see what happens over the next few weeks. I just really hope we don't end up with Hillary vs. McCain. I feel like that will be the same old thing again (even if Hillary is a woman). Go Obama!

(PS...I'm still accepting advice below from all you moms out there. Thanks.)

  1. i'm just sort of bummed about the election in general. there's nobody i LOVE. but i'd have to agree with you--I'm hoping Obama makes it to the ticket!

and here's what i'm wondering: if it's Obama vs. McCain, are we going to see a HUGE swing of mccain-hating republicans over to obama? i'm interested to watch how this plays out.

  2. I was up way too late too! I am SOOOO hoping Obama makes it. The election is over otherwise in my opinion, although it is interesting the degree to which conservatives hate McCain. Out of the three Republicans, I'd rather have him than anyone. An Obama v. McCain race will be very interesting indeed.

  3. I'm hoping Obama wins as well. I like his politics, and I actually would like to see a Democrat in office and he is certainly the best hope of that happening. (I'm officially an Independent but I'm leaning more and more left as I get older.) If Hilary wins the nomination, the Dems will lose. If Obama wins the nomination, the Dems will win.

    It's a nailbiter.

  4. As a conservative Republican, I will be voting for Obama if McCain gets the nomination (which he will, I'm sure). I will be writing in (or leaving the country) if it's McCain vs. Clinton. I can't stand either one. I hate McCain's politics (as a conservative, I would hate them because he's basically a democrat and not a very smart one), and I don't like Hillary on a personal level.

So...here's to hoping Obama gets the nomination. I'd love to see Obama and Romney together. I don't think it will happen, but I think they're combined strengths would be incredible!

  6. Hmm, I'd never even thought of Obama and Romney! It would be weird considering their political views, but they would also be a powerhouse team. Interesting...

  7. Yeah, I think "weird" is putting it lightly. I can't imagine either one of them agreeing to such a match-up, unless Romney reverts to his more liberal ways.

  8. As fun as Obama/Romney would be, it will never happen. It our system it would be political suicide for a split dem/rep ticket. And these two are so far apart on the issues there is no way.

  9. I have been a "Mama for Obama" since before he was running. I live in San Diego, renowned as a conservative enclave. At the middle school mock election today, Obama won by a landslide.

These is some excitin' times we's livin' in!
