good read: HIS DARK MATERIALS by Philip Pullman

Last night at approximately 12:42 a.m. I finished the last book in the His Dark Materials trilogy by Philip Pullman. My sister read the books after hearing that The Golden Compass has been made into a movie to be released in December. Nicole Kidman and Daniel Craig are in it, and it looks really good. So, Lauren read the books and then got my entire family and Jared to read them while we were on vacation last month. I finally started them a couple weeks ago.

The books are really good, geniusly creative, and very fun to read. There is mystery, intrigue, adventure, romance, and of course, a fight between good and evil. Only in this tale, our usual idea of good and evil is mixed up a bit. I'm not going to go into much detail because I really think the books are a better read if you go in relatively ignorant.

I loved the characters and the writing. The only thing I didn't love was the theology that is central to the story's conclusion. It is VERY different from what I personally believe, but the books still have an overall good moral message and within the framework of the author's theological views, good does triumph.

I definitely recommend this series. It has won several awards and been called the best fantasy series since The Lord of the Rings. It's easy reading and very entertaining. Plus, it really does make you think.

  1. Oh I am so happy when people recommend good books. I love to read but I hate it when I pick up a book and its boring. PS. The have really really cute aprons at Anthropologie.

  2. oh fun! new book recommendations.

my personal kept-me-up-til-2 AM-last-night-picks: Naomi Novik's Her Majesty's Dragon, Throne of Jade, and Black Powder War. Very fun. Thanks for posting about these! I saw the trailer, but didn't know the film was based on a book!
