appendix to today's previous post

Tonight I got the doozie that I was not expecting! Olivia asked to speak to me privately, so we went in the bedroom and shut the door. She had some questions about "girl parts" that led to the big discussion many a parent has dreaded--the birds and the bees! (Why do we call it that anyway?) I tried at first to just answer her specific questions without going into the whole of how babies are made and all that. My hesitation stemmed from the fact that I thought this something her mom probably would want to tell her. But Olivia is an inquisitive one and she doesn't take the "you'll understand more when you are older" answer, so I explained it all. Sperm, eggs, vaginas, penises, the whole nine yards. We even talked about circumcision. (Isaac is not circumcised, but she had seen another little boy who is.)

I must say, I think it went really well. Neither of us felt weird about it. I just answered her questions honestly as they came up. We talked for about 30 minutes. And I must say that I am really flattered that she felt comfortable talking to me about all this. She could have just as easily called and asked her mom, but she asked me. I'm really glad she did. I just hope her mom doesn't mind.

  1. um...talk about getting thrown into the deep end of motherhood! Trina, those kiddies are so lucky to have a mummy who can handle all of these things with such grace, self-possession, and patience!

  5. Wow, well done Trina. I'd probably say, "um, you're mom would really like to talk to you about this, here's the phone!" Okay, maybe not, but that sure sounds easier. How old is she?? Glad it went well!
