sleeping through the night

This morning I woke up about 6:15. The light was shining through the window and Asher was still asleep in his crib.

"Wow," I thought. "Asher slept totally through the night. He's been asleep since 7:30 last night!"

I was getting really excited when I heard him cry out and I went in to get him. I brought him back to bed to feed him. I was a little perplexed that only one of my breasts seemed full to bursting. After 11 hours without a feeding, I should be leaking all over, right? But I didn't give it much more thought.

When Jared woke up a few minutes later, I informed him of our son's superior sleeping. He got excited and said, "Oh he stayed asleep since 2 when I put him back in bed?"

"What do you mean? 2? He woke up at 2?"

"Yeah, he woke up and I brought him to you, you fed him, and then I put him back in his crib."

"Huh, I don't remember that AT ALL."

And I don't. I have absolutely no recollection of feeding him. None. I seriously thought he had slept 11 hours straight. And since I can't remember that means that he might as well have, right? I still apparently got a good 8 hours of sleep--2 am feeding or no.

I'll take it.

  1. and this is where i realize there must be equality in all things.

i am not a milk cow (in the abundant sense) like you, it has been the source of much frustration and many, MANY tears. so count your lucky stars.

on the flipside i have been blessed in other ways. like the fact that my nub has basically been sleeping through the night since he was about 8 weeks old and now routinely sleeps 11-12 hours without waking. it's incredible.

i'd probably swap to be a milkcow if i could though. except i really like sleep so hmmmm...

  2. Too, too funny. That's really, really awesome that Jared got up to bring Asher to you. I bet it was really helpful to your body to not fully wake up. Awesome.

  3. Yay for dads who help with feeding babies at 2 a.m.!

I'm glad you got some restful sleep.

  4. The thought of not remembering a breast-feeding session is totally hillarious to my single-person brain. Unfathomable. But, I'm not a mommy, so I take note of all incidents involving the girls.

  5. I just got caught up on a bunch of your posts! First of all that so funny that you didn't remember nursing Asher in the middle of the night! But it is glorious when they sleep 12 hours at night!

and great photographs! Love your new site and the logo. love it all! Good work! How do you find the time for it though?

and I hope you guys have found a place to live out here! Sorry your dream place fell through!

  6. ha! I can relate. I am sure that the fact that Avery basically nurses at night while I am sleeping accounts for a least some of my recent weight loss. funny that you actually got up twice without knowing it though.

  7. I do that all the time. My baby sleeps next to me, and she manages to latch on and feed during the night...while I'm asleep. I never remember when I wake up, but she must have eaten for obvious reasons. :)

  9. I think you're right that it counts for 11 hours if you can't remember being disturbed. Heck, why not?

  10. That's hilarious. I think I would also feel like Zoe slept through the night if she only nursed once.
