advice wanted

Ok, folks, I need some pregnancy/baby related advice, and I have faith in all of you out there to help a girl out in her time of need.

1. What are some good snacks that I can take to work? I'm getting sick of pretzels and almonds and yogurt. Yesterday I started feeling really not good because I got so hungry and had already eaten the big fat orange I brought for my afternoon snack. I need some new ideas! The hunger monster is getting worse!

2. So I won a $35 amazon gift card from a little contest Nicki had on her blog last week. Yay for me! Thanks Nicki! Now I am trying to decide what to spend it on. I'm thinking of getting a Bella Band or it's less expensive equivalent. I'm in that awkward stage of getting too big for my normal pants but can't fit maternity yet. Has anyone out there tried these? I'd like to know what you think.

3. I've also been looking ahead to when this baby arrives and thinking about getting a sling. There are a couple that I like, and I'm wondering if any of you have tried these or something similar. The first is the Peanut Shell Sling:And the second is the Moby wrap:Both can be used from infant through toddler and are around the same price on amazon. I'm just curious if you all have any opinions, or if there is another sling/wrap style carrier you love more. Please share!

That's it for now. I'll take any other 2nd trimester suggestions you might have though too!

Thanks!

  1. gosh I am so lame! once again...I have no advice. Eating was so hard for me that I didn't have to deal with the snack issue (that sounds so dumb) until recently. I just eat normal food though, because I don't have to work everyday, and when I am at work I just eat a meal at the hospital...which is really not as bad as it seems. I would say don't eat granola bars but only because they give me heart burn and are mostly sugar. I have been eating tons of oatmeal lately. I like the steel cut kind because its not so slimy but it takes 30 min. to cook. I just make a big pot and then put it in the fridge. I would say think "little meal" more, and not so much "snack". Ok this is the longest comment ever. About the slings, I have no idea. I have been wondering about them too. Mostly I keep seeing them for sale at obscene prices and thinking that I could make them...which might be the death of me...I think that a lot. Ok I can't wait to hear what everyone else says.

  2. 1. I suggest Ho Ho's or Ding Dongs.
    2. Bella Bands are the coolest thing since Ho Ho's and Ding Dongs.
    3. Check out http://thebabywearer.com/ They have reviews on every baby carier out there.

I ended up with the BabyHawk. You can ride baby front or back VERY comfortably - My two and a half year old still fits in it for hiking. LOVE it - and they use Amy Butler fabrics (darling!). I tons of compliments on it.

    Good luck!

  3. String cheese, blueberries, Nutella on graham crackers :)

I'm six months tomorrow and I'm still just using a normal hair elastic (the thick kind) on my normal jeans. But the Bella Band looks nice if you want to keep things smoother. I've been wearing such long shirts that it hasn't normally mattered.

No idea about slings that actually work well (obviously), but I did get this book for Christmas called Baby-Gami that I love, but mostly because the babies in it are so dang cute. The two reviews on Amazon make it sound not very practical though.

However, I think in theory, if you buy enough fabric, you should be able to find good ways to wrap it, which might be cheaper and more versatile in the end. Having said that, I'll probably get something with more support for when the baby's really small.

  4. 1) raisins and mini carrots.

    2) never got one, so I can't give advice. most girls i know would just wear pants a size or two larger than their normal size and then switch to maternity pants.

    3) i didn't like the slings because the weight distribution seemed to go more for your back than your shoulders and i have a slipped disc anyway, so i bought a front/back carrier. we have a snugli, and i like it--it's pretty inexpensive. baby bjorns are really nice too, but more expensive.

  5. 1) I have not a clue what to tell you, except enjoy eating if it doesn't make you sick.

    2) Looks kinda cool! If I ever am able to be pregnant, you know I'm going to splurge on pretty much all the cool stuff...why not?

    3) I have both a sling (a hand-me-down from my sister in law) and a Bjorn. Here's the thing...the sling is a cute idea but I'm with Rachael...the weight distribution is a little funky. (then again my SIL loved it - maybe not being prego I wasn't used to all that weight on me?) But they can be great for when the baby is still pretty small and if you get it on just right you can go for a while without discomfort (maybe I'm just not very good at putting it on)

I love my Bjorn (cause Mark can wear it too and it still looks kinda manly on him - I'm pretty sure he'd never put a sling on) and you can adjust the back thingie to more evenly distribute the weight. Both are pretty tricky to do any sort of serious chores while wearing, but I would definitely invest in either the sling or Bjorn. (they have new Bjorn's that have even more back support which I wish I would have gotten) I think it all comes down to personal preference. Buy both, try them out and return the one you don't like.

  6. Thanks for the tips, ladies. I think we'll probably end up getting a bjorn-like carrier as well, I just want a smaller easier option like the sling to use also. So if anyone has really liked or disliked a certain kind, I'd love to know!

  7. Katrina, this is Rachel Anderson (i saw you have another rachel:)

I put peanut butter on crackers (like ritz or saltines) and sometimes add a banana on top of that. Delicious. I also get huge bags of craisins at Costco and pop those.

I have never tried a sling, but it looks complicated. I've tried a bjorn and really liked it.

I have not tried the belly band. I just get long cami's for under my shirts. I wear lots of skirts when I get out of my pants. SOrry, not much help:)

  8. Yep - I love Ding Dongs too, but I guess that's not what you were thinking huh? Maybe yogurt or snack bars - there are thousands of different kinds of snack bars. Take care - Kellan

  9. Hi--I'm delurking from LDS women blogs...sorry! But, I'm a huge babywearer. I hated the Moby wrap--too big and bulky for on-the-go use. I love happy slings. (Google happy sling). They are bigger than hot slings, and fit my 20 pounder until he was 9 months old. Good luck!
