finally!

I now have Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows in my hand!!! I'm only a week behind the rest of the world. Here's to a night with little sleep! Luckily my mom brought two copies with her so Jared and I won't have to fight over the book. Long live Harry!

P.S.... We saw the 5th movie today too... quite good!

pioneer day!

Here in Utah, July 24th is, to some, a bigger deal than the 4th of July. July 24th is the day we celebrate the pioneers arrival into Utah back in 1847. Salt Lake City has a big parade and a rodeo. There are even fireworks. But we just celebrated with a little hike near one of the parks up Provo Canyon. And then we got a little crazy with some sparklers. Here are a few photos. If you would like to see more click here.
First let me set the scene:

Not too shabby, huh? Utah mountains really are gorgeous.

And here is one of my little "pioneers":

And here is another one:

Aren't those braids adorable?

Here they are together looking really happy:

And here's our other little pioneer, except not so dressed up and holding a stranger's puppy:

Flower pickin' fools:

Another scenic shot:

Enjoying the great outdoors.

It rained on the walk back... here we are a bit wet.

Back at the cinder-block palace... we had some good ole fashioned fun with sparklers.

And I'm spent.

i sure like this girl

Last night Grace asked me, "Do you have any kids?"

And thinking she was being sort of silly, because of course if I did she would know by now, I answered, "No."

"Yes, you do! We're your kids! You
do have kids!"

I smiled and hugged her and said, "Oh yes of course! You are my kids!"

I was touched.

Then we talked about how many more I should have, which fluctuated somewhere between 2 and 100. I'm thinking it will be closer to 2.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY GRACE!!!

This is Grace.

She turned four years old on Friday.

Grace "loves" and "hates" many things. This list changes daily, usually depending on what she wants at that moment.
She wants to sit on her sister's bed: "I LOVE blue!" (Because Olivia's sheet is blue.)
She doesn't want to wear her blue shirt: "I HATE blue!"

But one love for which her affection never dims is her love for sea creatures. When Grace prays this is almost always included: "Please bless the shawks and whawes and jehwy fish and stah fish and scuba divehs."

So this is what her cake looked like.

And earlier that day we went here and saw these.

We even touched these.

Back at home, Grace got lots of fun presents. Perhaps you will notice a theme.

And that's not even everything. Can we say spoiled? :-)

But I think everyone's favorite part was the cake.

Grace especially liked licking all the frosting off the sea creatures.

Happy Birthday, Gracie! I love you!

appendix to today's previous post

Tonight I got the doozie that I was not expecting! Olivia asked to speak to me privately, so we went in the bedroom and shut the door. She had some questions about "girl parts" that led to the big discussion many a parent has dreaded--the birds and the bees! (Why do we call it that anyway?) I tried at first to just answer her specific questions without going into the whole of how babies are made and all that. My hesitation stemmed from the fact that I thought this something her mom probably would want to tell her. But Olivia is an inquisitive one and she doesn't take the "you'll understand more when you are older" answer, so I explained it all. Sperm, eggs, vaginas, penises, the whole nine yards. We even talked about circumcision. (Isaac is not circumcised, but she had seen another little boy who is.)

I must say, I think it went really well. Neither of us felt weird about it. I just answered her questions honestly as they came up. We talked for about 30 minutes. And I must say that I am really flattered that she felt comfortable talking to me about all this. She could have just as easily called and asked her mom, but she asked me. I'm really glad she did. I just hope her mom doesn't mind.

the joys of motherhood

See this face? Looks quite innocent doesn't it? Almost as if he could do no wrong. And if you could hear the sweet voice that goes with it, you'd be even more convinced of his angelic nature. Well, let me tell you, things aren't always as they seem. Not that he's a bad boy. He isn't. But let me tell you what happened this week.

The kids were playing outside in their bathing suits because they had played in the sprinklers. No big deal. Well, Grace comes in and says, "Isaac pulled his bathing suit down!"

I'm thinking, "Oh dear! Please bless that Grace was the only witness to this!"

I go outside to look for Isaac and can't find him in the quad. I look on the other side of the building (where the kids aren't supposed to play) and finally find him, hiding near the bushes.

"Isaac, did you pull your bathing suit down?"

Guilty look with pouty face and looking down he says, "Yes."

"Did anyone else see besides Grace?"

"No."

"Are you sure?"

"Yes."

"Ok. Well come inside and change your clothes. No more playing outside."

We came inside and I told him that it was not appropriate to take off his clothes while outside, and he got changed.

Fast forward ten minutes. There is a little tap on the door and thinking it is Grace being silly I say, "Just open the door! It's unlocked." But it's not Grace, it's Olivia with her friend Sadie and Sadie's mom.

"I just wanted to tell you that I was looking for my daughter, Sophie [Sadie's younger sister, approximately age 5] and found her with Isaac in the stairwell. They both had their pants down. I don't think anything happened, but I wanted you to know."

Sigh!

I thank her for telling me and assure her we will be having a talk with Isaac.

At this point, I turn to Isaac and demand to know why he lied about someone else being with him while his pants were down.

He says, "No one was there the second time!"

The second time! "Well, it doesn't matter, you lied. And it is very much NOT ok to take off your clothes outside and show people!"

I called Jared and he was about home anyway. He had a talk with Isaac about modesty and decency and such. And told him he couldn't play outside the whole next day.

Now I know a lot of kids do this at some point, but what's my luck that it happens when he's with me! And it's not the first instance of childhood indiscretion during which I've been the misfortunate parent. A couple weeks ago, I took the kids with me to pick up some ice cream from the BYU Creamery. It was a busy Monday night and there were a lot of people in there, and of course the kids were asking for a million things to which the answer was no.

We bought the ice cream and went out to the car. As I am buckling Grace, I look back at Olivia and she has a SUPER guilty look on her face and quickly puts her hand on her pocket.

"Olivia, did you take something?"

Silence.

"Olivia..."

"Yeah, but Isaac did too!" She pulled out a little flashlight keychain.

I inform them that stealing is against the law and people go to jail for it, and that it's against God's law and very wrong, and we go back in the store to return the flashlights and find someone for the kids to confess to. But it's really busy and there are no employees that don't also have approximately 15 people waiting in line. We wander around the store hoping to find a random someone who works there, but nada! So, we put the flashlights back and I give the kids a lecture about how you need to confess when you do something wrong and that we'll be back. And I leave the store feeling like a bad mom for not waiting in the 15 person line so that they could properly confess but also relieved that I didn't.

As you can see, I've had quite the introduction to motherhood this summer. Not to mention all the scrapes and arguments and hitting (as in the kids hitting each other) and whining and messes and all those other fun things that kids do and we who profess to be grown ups must deal with and find lessons in. What joy this is!

They sure are cute though, huh?

good read: HIS DARK MATERIALS by Philip Pullman

Last night at approximately 12:42 a.m. I finished the last book in the His Dark Materials trilogy by Philip Pullman. My sister read the books after hearing that The Golden Compass has been made into a movie to be released in December. Nicole Kidman and Daniel Craig are in it, and it looks really good. So, Lauren read the books and then got my entire family and Jared to read them while we were on vacation last month. I finally started them a couple weeks ago.

The books are really good, geniusly creative, and very fun to read. There is mystery, intrigue, adventure, romance, and of course, a fight between good and evil. Only in this tale, our usual idea of good and evil is mixed up a bit. I'm not going to go into much detail because I really think the books are a better read if you go in relatively ignorant.

I loved the characters and the writing. The only thing I didn't love was the theology that is central to the story's conclusion. It is VERY different from what I personally believe, but the books still have an overall good moral message and within the framework of the author's theological views, good does triumph.

I definitely recommend this series. It has won several awards and been called the best fantasy series since The Lord of the Rings. It's easy reading and very entertaining. Plus, it really does make you think.

summer walk

We enjoyed a cooler day (90 degrees) by taking a long walk. Here's some of what we saw and did along the way...

Climbed trees

Decorated Mummy with a new fashion trend--tree branch hair accessories

Visited the bell tower

Saw some little duckies

Had a couple pouty moments

Walked along the creek

And then played by the fountain...

until Daddy came to drive us home!

The end.
Happy Friday the 13th!!!
